      General Info
      Sandra C. Christiansen, MD, is a board-certified allergist/immunologist who specializes in diagnosing and treating angioedema and allergic airway disease. Dr. Christiansen is an internationally respected allergy and angioedema expert and cares for people with various medical conditions related to the immune system. These include respiratory tract diseases (e.g. sinusitis and asthma), allergic conditions of the skin (e.g. atopic dermatitis) and food and medication sensitivity.Dr. Christiansen has been actively involved in the U.S. Hereditary Angioedema Association (HAEA) since the organizations inception. She played a key role in developing the HAEAs patient registry database and biorepository and serves on the medical advisory board. Dr. Christiansen was instrumental in establishing the U.S. HAEA Angioedema Center at UC San Diego Health. As a professor of medicine, Dr. Christiansen is active in teaching fellows at UC San Diego School of Medicine. Both her clinical and research interests include angioedema and airway inflammation with an emphasis on allergic asthma and aspirin exacerbated respiratory disease (AERD). She has received numerous grant awards and has been a principal investigator on several NIH-funded projects. Dr. Christiansen has also led volunteer efforts targeted at upgrading allergy and immunology care for underserved communities.Dr. Christiansen is extensively published, having coauthored over 100 articles, reviews and book chapters. Her work has appeared in The Journal of Allergy Clinical Immunology, the New England Journal of Medicine, The Journal of Immunology, and The Journal of Clinical Investigation, among others. She frequently speaks at medical conferences and symposiums.Prior to joining UC San Diego Health, Dr. Christiansen cared for patients at Kaiser Permanente. Before that, she served as the division head of Allergy and Immunology and clinical co-director of the Allergy Asthma and Immunology fellowship program at Scripps Clinic.Dr. Christiansen completed her internal medicine residency at UC San Diego School of Medicine and allergy and immunology fellowship at Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation. She earned her medical degree from Loyal University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine, graduating with highest honors. Dr. Christiansen is board-certified in internal medicine and allergy and immunology.She has received numerous awards, including the 2008 American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology outstanding volunteer clinical faculty award and the 2014 Kaiser physician merit award for clinical excellence.
